PARAMAKUDI: The much-awaited Vaigai water released on September 21 reached Pottythatty on Thursday and is on its way to Ramanathapuram big tank, bringing cheers to the people of Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram, where people have been buying potable water owing to scarcity.

Officials were worried a lot following a slow flow of the river water after it reached Manamadurai in Sivaganga district four days back. Usually during release, Vaigai water reaches only upto Manamadurai. Collector K. Sellamuthu and District Revenue Officer V. Srinivasan, accompanied by officials of Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board, Public Works Department, Agriculture and Revenue departments inspected the flow at Paramakudi.

Mr. Sellamuthu said the Vaigai water would solve the drinking water scarcity at least for six months. All 16 combined water projects had received fair amount of water following the water release. More than 3 lakh people living in Muthukulathur, Kadaladi, Paramakudi, Kolunthurai, and Ramanathapuram would be benefited owing to water recharge.

Water supply to Paramakudi could be increased from present of supply of 35 lpcd to 50 lpcd. The recharge levels around the major projects such as Kadaladi-Muthukulathur, Kolunthurai, Sathanur and Meyyanendal were also increased substantially.
