Supreme Court-appointed panel likely to visit soon

With the water level crossing the 130 feet mark at the Periyar dam, the five-member committee is expected to reach the dam tomorrow, officials from the Public Works Department said here on Tuesday.

With widespread rain in catchment areas after the south-west monsoon picked up in the belt, there has been good rain in many pockets.

As a result, the level in the dam had been rising appreciably over the last five days close to eight feet.

In the last 24 hours alone, the level had gone up by two feet. The flow into the reservoir on Monday was 6,770 cusecs and the discharge to the Vaigai dam was 1,573 cusecs.

While farmers are in an upbeat mood and have started preparing agriculture operations in full swing, the district administration had declared a holiday for schools on Monday as a precaution.

Roads damaged

Roads in many parts of the district, especially, in Andipatti, Cumbum and Uthamapalayam suffered a lot.

Some trees had fallen on the ghat section towards Munnar near Bodimettu. However, with the help of locals, highway officials had cleared them without much inconvenience to vehicular movement.

In the meantime, the PWD Executive Engineer (Periyar Vaigai) Subramani said the five-member committee would reach here tomorrow and very soon, the Supreme Court appointed three-member monitoring committee would inspect the dam.

There would be cloudy sky for the next 24 hours in the region as per the weather forecast for Wednesday.
