`A canal should be created from Mettur Reservoir'

RASIPURAM: The Tamizhaga Vivasyigal Sangam has appealed to the Centre and the state governments to initiate measures to link the Ponni, Tirumanimutharu and Cauvery Rivers to provide a fillip to agriculture activities in this part of the State.

A resolution in this regard was adopted at the Salem - Namakkal District Conference of the association held here on Sunday. A canal should be created from Mettur Reservoir linking the three rivers and all the major tanks in Salem and Namakkal districts. The surplus water from the reservoir should be released into the canal and stored in the tanks. This would help improve the ground water level in the two districts. Farmers in Mettur, Sankagiri, Edaipadi, Rasipuram, Tiruchengode and Paramathi Velur would largely benefit from the canal. The Centre and state governments should immediately take steps to link the three rivers, the association demanded.

In another resolution, the association members asked the Centre to waive the interest on crop loans obtained from the Land Development banks and nationalised banks.

The Centre should provide necessary assistance sought by the State Government to take up relief activities in the flood-affected areas, members further said. In yet another resolution, the association requested the State Government to withdraw the one per cent cess imposed on tapioca tuber and increase the procurement price for milk.

State president of the association M. R. Sivasamy, State vice-president A. Ramsamy Gounder and the State general secretary S.A. Chinnusamy spoke.
