`Villupuram-Pondy train services may resume by March'

Pondicherry Nov. 13. The train services in the Villupuram-Pondicherry section, now suspended owing to gauge conversion work, would resume by March next year, according to the member of Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee, Tiruchi, A. Balasubramanian.

He told newsmen on return from Tiruchi after participating in the sixth quarterly meeting of the Committee on Wednesday that the gauge conversion involved an expenditure of Rs.43.83 crores. The 38-km-long track between Villupuram and Pondicherry involved rebuilding of 115 minor and three major bridges.

Mr. Balasubramanian, who is the General Secretary of the Pondicherry Chamber of Commerce, is a representative of the Union Territory on the Committee.

Urging the the Pondicherry Administration to earmark the funds on its part for construction of the road over bridges at three point within the Union Territory limits, Mr. Balasubramanian said that he had also reiterated the plea that direct train services from Pondicherry to Chennai and Pondicherry to Tirupati might be made available.
