Villagers oppose move to open sand quarry

A group of residents of villages around Unniyur have opposed the Public Works Department move to open a sand quarry on the Cauvery river in the village.

In a representation to the district authorities at the public grievance meeting, the villagers said that opening of the sand quarry would adversely affect their water sources and the watertable in the region.

The PWD has recently conducted a survey to open a sand quarry at Unniyur and the plan should be shelved, they demanded.

Earlier, a group of bullock cart operators presented a petition to the district authorities seeking permission for lifting river sand in bullock carts. They contended that over 6,000 families in the district were dependent on the trade with due permission and on payment of requisite fee.

They demanded the restoration of the permission to bullock cart operators for lifting sand from the rivers.
