Villagers allege harassment by police

TUTICORIN, OCT.11. A section of Punnakayil residents today marched to the Collectorate alleging harassment by some police officials and anti-socials.

After submitting a memorandum to the Collector and the Superindentent of Police, the villagers told mediapersons that they were harassed by the police on the pretext of enquiring into the murder case of the then panchayat president at Punnakayal, Ravi Corera.

Some of their boats were burnt and tension was prevailing in the region, they said, adding that ``the police use unparliamentary words and enter the houses during untimely hours for enquiry.''

They are targeted for being the relatives of the persons, who were nabbed by the police in the murder case.

The Collector, V Chandrasekharan, told The Hindu that the problem of the villagers would be studied and appropriate action taken accordingly.
