Vasan disputes Advani's claim

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party president, L.K. Advani for calling all-India bandh against the terrorist attack in Ayodhya. It was not befitting for an opposition party like the BJP to attempt to make political capital out of an issue like Ayodhya.

In this connection he reminded Mr. Advani of the support extended by the Congress to the then National Democratic Alliance Government when Parliament was attacked by terrorists in 2002. In a statement here on Saturday, Mr.Vasan said when terrorism was rearing its "ugly head" it was the duty of the opposition parties to support the Government in its fight against terrorism. Unfortunately the BJP was not behaving like a responsible opposition party.

Mr. Vasan also disputed Mr. Advani's statement that the attack in Ayodhya was due to the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act. He reminded him that the attack on Akshardham Temple in Gujarat had happened when the POTA was in force.

He also faulted Mr. Advani for his present stand on Ayodhya. When the NDA was in power, Mr. Advani said the solution to the Ayodhya issue should be found either through court or dialogue. Now he was demanding construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site.
