Valsaraj pays surprise visit to PHC

Pondicherry May 22 . The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, today paid a surprise visit to a Primary Health Centre at Murungambakkam in the Mudaliarpet Assembly constituency to see for himself its working.

He told newspersons at the end of the hour-long visit that he would pay such surprise visits to other Primary Health Centres operated by the Health Department.

He said that during his visit today he went into the details of medicines available, particularly life-saving and anti-venom (against snake bite) drugs so that patients did not have to rush to the headquarters.

Mr.Valsaraj said it would not be practically possible for the State Government to start a medical college in the State sector. The investment would be heavy. The norms of the Medical Council of India had been modified now by which the college and hospital should be located at the same site.

He said that at present Pondicherry was being well served by the Centrally-sponsored JIPMER and the number of seats for local students was 20 out of 75 available.

Mr.Valsaraj said there was a proposal to open shortly a branch of JIPMER's extension service for medical care of people in Karaikal.
