University to host all-India athletic meet

TIRUNELVELI: The Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, has accorded the honour of conducting the 66th All-India Inter-University Athletic Meet to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University at St. John's College Grounds, Palayamkottai under floodlights from January 30 onwards.

Over 3,000 athletes, including 900 girls, and their coaches from 150 universities across the country are expected to participate in the 5-day sports meet to be inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Cynthia Pandian. "The glittering inaugural function, to be embellished by variety entertainments by school and college students and dazzling fireworks display by Standard Fireworks, Sivakasi, would be witnessed by `star athletes' like P.T. Usha, Beenamol, Anju Bobby George and Shiney Wilson," Dr. Cynthia told mediapersons here recently.

A team of 150 officials, led by the Asian Technical Delegate, C.K. Valson, would conduct 25 events for the boys while girls would compete for the title in 24 events, except pole-vault, which would be displayed on a mega screen to be installed by a Delhi-based company. Photo-finish cameras would be used. "We try to accommodate all vital components of an international sports meet in this national meet," said D. Shanmuganathan, Head, Department of Physical Education and Sports, MSU, and Organising Secretary of the event.
