Tsunami-hit schools do well in SSLC examination

CUDDALORE: Two government high schools in the tsunami-affected areas at T.S. Pettai (Thandavarayan Solagan Pettai) and Periakuppam in Cuddalore district have achieved cent per cent results in the SSLC examinations.

All 45 candidates (21 boys and 24 girls) from the T.S.Pettai School, and 64 candidates (38 boys and 26 girls) from the Periakuppam School came out successfully. These schools have been consistently performing well.

The T.S. Pettai headmaster, Kunjithapatham, who retired on April 30, provided special coaching to these students for a month during the extra time given to the tsunami-affected students to face examinations.

At Villupuram five schools in the tsunami-hit areas, Marakkanam, Anumanthai, Mudaliarkuppam, Kottakuppam and Koonimedu achieved over 90 per cent results. Chief Educational Officer of Villupuram S. Kannappan said this was possible due to the dedicated faculty and the cooperation of parents and students.

Mr. Kannappan said since the SSLC syllabus was new, guides and question banks were prepared and distributed to the students. In the SSLC examinations, the district registered 66 per cent pass, bettering its performance over 64.28 per cent the previous year.

Of the 26,861 candidates, 18,191 came out successfully (67.72 per cent). In the matriculation stream, 3,385 of the 3,922 candidates passed. The rank holders from the government schools are: R.Ilakkiya of Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Parangipettai - 473/500, V. Dinakar of Govt. Boys HSS at Panruti - 472, and P. Subashree of Govt.HS at Cuddalore Old Town - 471.

The top performers from the aided schools are: R. Aishwarya-Priyadarsini of Subbaraya Chettiar Girls HSS at Panruti - 483, the second rank was shared by R.Krithika and M.Saranya of St. Annes HSS at Cuddalore - 479 each, and R.Tamil Thendral of Sevamandir Mahalir School - 476.

From the matriculation schools: S. Sangeetha Seetharaman of Nirmala Mat HSS at Chidambaram - 1055/1100; G. Niveditha of St.Joseph's MHSS at Neyveli - 1050, and S.Santhosh Kumar of Jawahar MHSS at Neyveli - 1049.

As many as 27 schools in the district have produced cent per cent results of which two are aided schools and two are self-financing schools.
