Training for students on environment awareness

Pondicherry Nov. 10 . A 10-day training programme to create awareness of environmental and consumer protection among students of higher secondary schools in rural areas in Pondicherry would be held from tomorrow under the joint auspices of the Pondicherry Environmental and Consumer Protection Organisation (PECPO) and the National Service Scheme operated by the Education department.

Henry K. Rajaraman, PECPO general secretary, said in a communication today that students of the Government higher secondary schools in Ariankuppam, Thavalakuppam, Embalam, Bahoor,Nettapakkam, Madagadipet, Villianoor (including a girls HSS), Koonichampet and Thondamanatham would be covered, taking up one school a day. The training will be for eight hours from 9 a. m. in each school.

Mr. Rajaraman said the students would be taught the salient features of the Consumer Protection Act, rights of consumers, the legislation relating to protection of environment, the provisions of the Weights and Measures Act, measures to curb adulteration etc. Quiz contest would be held as part of the training.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is also a co-sponsor of the training scheme and representatives from different departments and organisations would address the students.
