Traffic restored on highway

TIRUCHI: Traffic on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway was restored on Saturday over a week after a temporary causeway was washed away in floods at Asoor near Thuvakudi.

The causeway was laid adjacent to a minor bridge under construction on the highway. The causeway was breached due to heavy discharge from the tanks that surplussed in the region on November 23. Traffic on the Tiruchi-Thajavur section was diverted via Keeranur and Pudukottai due to the breach.

Causeway reinforced with sandbags, gravel

The causeway has now been reinforced with sandbags and gravel enabling the resumption of traffic on either side of the road. Police, however, restricted movement of heavy vehicles over the causeway.

Heavy vehicles were allowed alternately on either side of the highway. The resumption of traffic on the busy highway brought a sigh of relief to commuters and students.
