Tracing the journey of Sankara Nethralaya

“When people talk more about the medical services provided by Sankara Nethralaya, the doctors at the hospital should aim for making this institution a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Training,” said Vice-Chancellor of The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Mayil Vahanan Natarajan on Friday. He launched a book ‘Insight- A Passion for Compassion’, a biography of Sankara Nethralaya, a unit of Medical Research Foundation. The first copy was received by Ashok Mehta, Board Member of Sankara Nethralaya.

The book, penned by eminent authors, V.V. Ranganathan, George Skaria and Meera Prasad, has been brought out by Lone Tree Books. It traces the interesting journey of the hospital from its humble beginnings on modest rented premises to its emergence as a high-class eye care centre with several centres within and outside Chennai. Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has written the foreword to the book.

The proceeds of the sale of the book would go towards meeting the cost of providing free eye care and free surgery to the poor and needy, said a spokesperson. S. Baskaran and T.S. Surendran, Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively of Sankara Nethralaya were present on the occasion.

A panel discussion on ‘Health Care in India –Evolving Models’ was moderated by journalist and founder of Spending and Policy Research Foundation, Govindaraj Ethiraj. Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya, S.S. Badrinath, and Journalist S. Gurumurthy were among the panellists.
