For those who passed by the toll plaza at Athupalam in Coimbatore on Tuesday, it was a surprise stop at the toll counter where handbills were distributed urging the road users to pay the toll. The personnel at the toll plaza told the commuters that they have to pay the toll from Wednesday.

N. Ramesh Babu, who is employed at an industry in Kuniamuthur, said that he went by the toll plaza every day. For the last three years no one had collected the toll. On Tuesday, there was no clear explanation on why the road users should pay the toll from Wednesday, why it was not collected for the last three years and the amount to be paid. The public should have been given the details clearly, he said.

According to the notice distributed to the public by the L & T Transportation Infrastructure, the company has been operating and maintaining the Coimbatore Bypass Privatisation Project under a tripartite agreement with the Union and State Governments. The agreement is valid from 1998 to 2018 at Athupalam. However, there are rumours that the project concession period is over and the road has been handed over to the National Highways. The project is effective as per the agreement and hence, the public are urged to pay the toll and not to believe the rumours, it said.

L & T officials were not available for comments when contacted by The Hindu .
