TNCC chief competent to issue notice: Elangovan

CHENNAI NOV. 1. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president is competent enough to issue show-cause notices to all partymen except MPs and All-India Congress Committee members, its working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said here today. ``The rules are very clear. So, there is nothing wrong in sending notices'', he told the media, responding to the legislature party leader, S.R. Balasubramaniam's remark that he should have been consulted before the action was taken against two MLAs, accusing them of issuing advertisements in the media welcoming the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, during her recent visit to Thanjavur.

Joining issue with Mr. Balasubramaniam on the status of his position (as working president), Mr. Elangovan said whenever need arose, the party created such posts.

The late Kamalpathi Tripathi was once working president. ``Possibly because of his advancing age and also because he was out of the party for some years, Mr. Balasubramaniam has forgotten it.''

Mr. Elangovan faulted the State Government for not holding the annual ceremony to administer an anti-terrorism pledge on the death anniversary of the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. The practice had been followed for the last several years. This time, no pledge was taken even at district headquarters, he said.
