TN Foodgrains Marketing Yard, MKU to sign MoU

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Marketing Yard (TNFMY) Limited - the Special Purpose Vehicle for establishing the Madurai Cereals, Pulses and Staples Milling Cluster in Madurai, and the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) will soon enter into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a joint effort to improve the activities of the foodgrains processing units in the Milling Cluster.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held on Monday at the MKU under the chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu. The chairman and managing director, TNFMY, S. Rethinavelu, exhorted the university to join hands with the TNFMY and the pave way for upgrading cereals, pulses and oilseeds processing units by incorporating various findings of the university having relevance to specific needs of the above industries.

This joint exercise envisages the formation of a committee for improving the activities of the foodgrains processing units in the CPS Milling Cluster. K. Suresh Kumar, executive director, J. Rajamohan, director, administration, and P. Pillaiyar, chief executive officer (technical), from the grains yard, M. Jeyakumar of Tamil Nadu Council for Enterprise Development, P.R. Athappan, Dean (Industrial Consultancy), and professors of departments of Energy, Biotechnology, Marketing and Information Technology participated.

Accordingly, a committee was formed to formulate programmes covering subjects like utilisation of non-conventional energy sources for drying, improving seeds of grains like pulses for pest and disease resistance and quality improvement, collection of information on ethnic and traditional foods, strategies for improving internal and export marketing, better information and communication technology for improving, processing and marketing aspects besides popularisation programmes of the yard through the university's Electronic Multimedia Research Centre.

The committee comprises professors K. Veluthambi, S. Shanmugasundaram, P. Muthusubramanian, S. Paulraj, U. Suriya Rao, E. Palaniandi, G. Arumugam, K. Pitchumani, P. Palanivelu, I. Muthiah and P. R. Athappan and S. Rethinavelu, K. Suresh Kumar and P. Pillaiyar.
