‘Tirupur knitwear cluster lacks enlightened leadership’

The Tirupur knitwear cluster lacks enlightened leadership which is one of the main reasons for the industry here to plunge into the lean phase through which it traverses now, according to S. Gurumurthy, renowned chartered accountant, corporate consultant, and columnist.

“Considering the inherent strengths possessed by the apparel production chain in Tirupur over the last few decades, no one can imagine that the cluster would have fallen into the predicament in its present form,” he said.

He appealed to the entrepreneurs to give strength to the industry leadership so that Tirupur as a cluster gets rejuvenated in the shortest possible time.

Mr. Gurumurthy was giving a special lecture on the ‘Present problems faced by Tirupur and its solution’ organised by Dharma Rakshana Samithi here on Saturday.

According to him, people leading the cluster should always remain selfless working for the entire spectrum of the textile segment if the apparel industry here as a whole to prosper.

“Unless the cluster developed, it will be hard even for those individuals who flourished to sustain their prosperity in the long run,” he said.

Mr. Gurumurthy reminded that Tirupur got its name at the global level in the past not because of any individual successes but only as a region/cluster.

He was of the opinion that industrial associations need to be active in organising technical discourses among its members and also research, the two areas in which the Tirupur cluster had been lagging behind.

He asked the industrialists to develop a tendency to save a substantial portion of their earnings so that it could be utilized during the financially bad phases in business.

Swami Dayananda Saraswathi and senior chartered accountant T.R.Ramanathan spoke.

The meeting was attended by industrialists from different stages of the apparel production chain.
