Tirunallar in for a major facelift

PONDICHERRY OCT. 13. The Tourism Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, and officials from various government departments today discussed proposals to beautify Tirunallar, famous for its Saneeswara temple, and set up several facilities in the temple town.

Some of the major initiatives presented before the Minister included formation of a Tirunallar Temple Town Development Society as an autonomous body, laying of an airstrip, laying of a 100-foot bypass circular ring road, freezing of new constructions or additional ones within the area of the `car streets' (where the temple car is taken on procession), shifting of liquor shops from the car streets and establishment of recycled water purifying systems in Nalan kulam, Saraswathi Theertham and Brahma Theertham and revitalisation of 14 theerthams.

A total of 40 proposals have been drawn up. They included creation of a temple museum with models of all navagraha temples, a waiting house and formation of queue system, publishing a book on the temple's history, setting up of a permanent police outpost in temple premises, fixing of focus lights for all gopurams and vimanas, a sound and light show on King Nala and Lord Saneeswara, setting up of a navagraha temple park with a children's garden and a mini-planetarium and a 2-MW captive gas power plant for the temple.

Setting up of high mast lights, parks, two tourist vehicle parking complexes, construction of marriage halls and a spacious inter-State bus stand, conversion of the Karaikal-Thirunallar-Mayiladuthurai meter gauge line into a broad gauge line, laying of a walkers path and cycling lane along the Arasalar river and establishment of a boat house will be considered.

The Government plans to arrange darshan tours to navagraha temples and packaged tours to various places such as Chidambaram and Tranquebar.
