The district has been sanctioned Rs.1.01 crore under the Seed Village Scheme during the current financial year for providing training to farmers in quality seed production and distribution of certified and foundation seeds to farmers at subsidised cost.

About 150 tonnes of paddy, 12 tonnes of cumbu (pearl millet), 45 tonnes of pulses seeds and 150 tonnes of oilseed crops such as groundnut, gingelly and sunflower would be distributed to the farmers at 50 per cent subsidy. A major portion of the allocation, Rs.80.4 lakh, would go towards seeds subsidy, according to Agriculture Department officials.

Farmers would also be trained in production of quality seeds. The training modules would cover selection of varieties, seasonal application of bio-fertilizers, micro-nutrients and improved seed production technologies. The training would be conducted in three phases to cover the techniques to be adopted by the farmers in pre-sowing, flowering stage and post-harvest handling. Farmers would be educated on proper methods of drying and cleaning of the seeds and scientific storing.

About 140 training programmes would be conducted across the district during the year. Twenty of the training programmes would be on production of paddy seeds, 60 on oilseed crops, 40 on pulses and 20 on millets. The Department would spend about Rs.21lakh for organising the training programmes.

A training programme on oil seed production was organised at Vaikarai village in Thuraiyur taluk on Monday. T.Indira Gandhi, MLA, inaugurated the programme and distributed mini-kits of inputs to the farmers. J.Sekar, Joint Director of Agriculture, stressed the importance of producing quality seeds for improving productivity.
