Tips for Personal Safety

Accidents can happen at any time and place. We should be aware of some handy First Aid for all occasions.

Protecting Your Hands

Before using any tool or equipment, ensure that it is in good working condition. If not, get it repaired before use or replace the tool equipment.

Use appropriate protective devices like gloves and guards especially while working with chemicals.

Never wear gloves near moving machinery as they can trap the hands.

When repairing/cleaning machinery, always disconnect the power supply and follow the look out procedures.

Never wear bracelets, watches or loose clothing when working near moving machinery parts. Keep your hands away from the moving parts of the machinery.

Ensure that machine guards meant for shielding dangerous parts are securely in place.

Use brushes or cleaning devices for removing debris, chips, glass pieces, dust, etc.

Wash your hands frequently more so when handling chemicals, before eating anything or even before going home.

Never use industrial solvents, mineral oils, etc for cleaning hands.

First Aid Using Water

Burns: Immerse the burnt part immediately in cold water until the pain subsides.

Sprains: Immerse the sprained joint in ice-cold water for about 30 minutes. You can also take cold packs.

Dog Bite: Wash the bruise first under running water for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Then wash with mild soap and water, and then consult a doctor.

Chemical on the skin: The areas of contact should be flushed with plenty of water to wash off the chemical. For alkali burns, water should be used only if available in large quantity.
