Timely eye-opener

Sir, — V.R. Krishna Iyer's article, ``Rivers, sand and people's survival'' (Jan. 23) is a timely eye-opener. Human beings must contribute to preserve the natural resources. Ancient traditions are of immense use even today. The old village administration was kept intact when revenue settlement was done by the British.

Rivers, streams, lakes, tanks, canals, grazing fields and drinking water sources were entered in village records. A prohibitory order book was maintained wherein all public purpose items were entered. It is unethical, unlawful and unconstitutional to damage natural resources. Mr. Iyer's advice must be implemented so that the future generation will not accuse us of having destroyed nature.
