Three get sports scholarship

TIRUCHI: In recognition of their performance at the national tournaments, three students of Tiruchi district have been awarded sports scholarship worth Rs. 5,000 each by the State Government for 2005-06.

The Collector, Ashish Vachhani, gave away the scholarships at a function here on Tuesday.

S. Jeeva Sagayaraj, a Standard XI student of Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School, Teppakulam, won bronze in Epee event at the VI sub-junior National Fencing Championship at Chennai in 2004.

P. Ranjith of Boiler Plant Boys Higher Secondary School, Kailasapuram, and G. Nanthini of Amala Girls Higher Secondary School, Musiri, were part of the kabaddi and volleyball teams, which finished winner and runner-up respectively at the 50th National School Games in 2004.

The award has come as a boost to the youngsters, who feel elated at being recognised by the Government. They say that the sum would be helpful for getting kits and meeting the expenses while participating in tournaments.

"These scholarships will encourage the youngsters to perform well. It will also be an added advantage to secure sports appointment," says the District Sports Officer, C. Punniyamoorthy.
