The next President

Sir, — The President should be above politics. Gone are the days when we could have a philosopher-President like Dr. Radhakrishnan. Karan Singh falls short of the requirement because of his political background.

The President, K.R. Narayanan, showed his leanings towards the Congress when he gave Sonia Gandhi an unduly long time to form the government. He went rather too far in insisting that a member of the SC/ST be appointed to the higher judiciary. He was critical of the constitution of the Constitution Review Commission initiated by his own Government. A President has a right to caution the Prime Minister in private but not air his disapproval publicly.

As regards P.C. Alexander, Governor of Maharashtra, his impeccable record as a former bureaucrat and his administrative and political experience as Principal Secretary and Adviser to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi will stand him in good stead. His Congress past has not stood in the way of his being acceptable to the BJP and its allies.
