Thanjavur municipality has become a corporation with effect from Wednesday. Savithiri Gopal, municipal chairperson, who has become the first mayor of the Thanjavur City Corporation, received the Government Order from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in Chennai. Councillors and staff of the municipality and AIADMK cadres celebrated the announcement by bursting crackers and distributing sweets in front of the corporation office.

The building, hitherto known as municipal building, was rechristened as Thanjavur City Corporation with an emblem of the Big Temple and paddy. The emblem carries a motto: Engal Pani Thangalukke (our work is for you).

The municipality established in May 9, 1866, celebrated its centenary in 1967 when C.N.Annadurai was the Chief Minister. It became a special-grade municipality in 1983 during M.G.Ramachandran’s government. The new corporation will have an area of 36.31 sq km and a population of around five lakh. The first meeting of the Thanjavur City Corporation is scheduled to take place on February 21.
