Slow progress of maintenance work by the Public Works Department has left many water regulation structures and portions of the bund of Thadapalli - Arakkankottai canal, which is the main source of water for more than 25,000 acres of land in the district, severely damaged.

The bunds and the retaining walls of the canal cry for attention at several places.

The shutters at many water regulation points need immediate replacement. The bunds remain completely damaged at a few places.

The canal's bed also remains heavily silted at a number of locations. Wild growth of plants on the bed affects the flow of water. The district is facing severe water shortage and the farmers are striving hard to use every drop of water for irrigation.

But the failure of authorities to ensure proper maintenance to the canal has led to huge wastage this year, farmers here charge.

Farmers claimed that they had made a number of appeals to the department to initiate steps to strengthen the canal and also take up full scale maintenance and repair works as needed.

But no serious efforts were made by the department for strengthening the canal till date, they said.

The farming community has appealed to the department to carry out maintenance and repair works without any further delays.

Officials from the department said that they had planned to carry out the repair works this year.
