Textile units hit

PONDICHERRY, DEC. 30. The AIADMK legislator, Mr. A.Anbalagan, has brought to the notice of the Railway Minister, Mr.Nitish Kumar, on the impact of the Centre's globalisation policies on the textile mills.

Presenting a copy of the memorandum to press persons, during the latter's visit here on Saturday, he said the implementation of uniform sales tax had upset the Union Territory's economic progress as the Centre had withdrawn the tax exemption for this sector.

He called for steps to promote the port and linking it with a railway line. A loco-shed and stock yard also needs to be developed. Mr.Anbalagan also sought the construction of a new railway station on the site of the Swadeshi Cotton mills. This will help in saving travel time for those having to commute between the municipal bus terminal and the railway station.

The MLA also appealed to the Minister to initiate steps to provide jobs to the families of the poor in Davidpet and Rodierpet in Uppalam constituency, who have been displaced by the gauge conversion.
