Tamil scholars honoured

CHENNAI, FEB. 9. Four Tamil scholars — M. Srinivasan, Sudha Seshayyan, Ezhil Amudhan and V. Venkatraman — were honoured yesterday by violinist G. Lalgudi Jayaraman with medals and Rs. 5,000 in cash for spreading Subramania Bharati's fame.

The mementos were presented at a function organised by Shriram Group of companies.

R. Gandhi, senior advocate at the Madras High Court, gave away prizes to the winners of the State-level competition on Bharati for school and college students. The contest was held on February 1 in Tiruchi, Chennai, Madurai, Karaikudi and Vellore.

Three winners from each category — middle school, higher secondary and college — won cash awards and certificates.

Andal Priyadarshini of Doordarshan Kendra released a book titled `Bharatiyil Ariviyal.'

For 17 years now, the Shriram group has been holding Bharathi's birthday celebrations, said G. Sundaresan, Chief Executive Officer of the group.
