CHENNAI: The Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, celebrating its golden jubilee, conferred the titles of "Sangeetha Choodamani" and "Aacharya Choodamani" on vocalist `Bombay' Jayashree Ramnath and veena exponent Kalpagam Swaminathan on Saturday.

Presenting the titles, medallions and citations to the artistes, and inaugurating the 50th Gokulashtami Sangeetha Utsavam, the SPIC chairman A.C. Muthiah said Tamil music must spread further and reach the masses.

He said the Tamil Isai Sangam honoured many artistes after they were recognised by the Sabha.

Music critic K.S. Mahadevan said Ms. Jayashree's tutelage under Lalgudi Jayaraman was the turning point and the climax of her career.

Ms. Kalpagam Swaminathan's contribution to Thanjavur-style veena rendering and teaching for over six decades was incredible.

Felicitating the artistes, V.V. Srivatsa said the award was a rare honour.

Devaki Muthiah distributed prizes to winners of Gokulashtami Talent Promotion Concerts conducted by the Sabha in August last year.
