Talk to all groups

Sir, — Three phases of the elections in Jammu and Kashmir are over and they turned out to be as free and fair as any other election in India. But this is not an end in itself. The Central Government should come forward now to talk to the Kashmiri people. The Government should talk to everyone, — the Hurriyat, the political parties, the Opposition and even extremist organisations. The talks need not have an agenda but just the effort of starting talks would be an important step forward. It would restore the shattered confidence of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. If Sri Lanka can involve Norway in talks with the LTTE there is no reason why India continues its rigid stand to keep mediators out of the talks.
