Meeting takes stock of epidemic control measures in Thanjavur district

Special Correspondent

THANJAVUR: Collector M. Veera Shanmugha Moni has appealed to the panchayat presidents to take all steps in villages under their control to prevent outbreak of infectious diseases.

Presiding over a coordination committee meeting at the collectorate here on Friday, he said panchayat presidents should take steps to clean overhead drinking water tanks. Bleaching powder should be used to clean the tank every day. If any person in their village was suspected to have contracted any communicable disease, the panchayat chief should arrange to send the affected person to the nearest hospital for treatment. Nearby Primary Health Centre should be informed of prevalence of any contagious disease.

Drug list on infectious diseases should be maintained at the PHCs. Each panchayat should maintain a stock of 200 grams of bleaching powder, 100 litres of phenol and 500 grams of lime powder.

Town panchayat chiefs and municipal chairpersons must see to it that overhead tanks were cleaned properly and chlorinated water was supplied. Public places should be kept clean and bleaching powder should be sprinkled wherever needed. Water stagnation should be prevented. Movement of stray pigs and dogs should be kept in check. Boiled water must be used for drinking and cooking.

Public Health department should take steps to find out prevalence of water-borne infectious diseases and initiate preventive measures, he said.
