Sugarcane crop destroyed in downpour

Downpour accompanied by gale destroyed standing sugarcane crop on about 200 acres in Thevur area on Saturday evening.

Farmers have raised sugarcane in a large area in the villages of Senrayanur; Peramachipalayam; Konakazhuthanur; Odasakkarai; Kaaniyalampatti; Vatrampalayam; Pullagoundampatti; Kaveripatti; Vellalapalayam; Koneripatti; Poonanpalayam, Kottayur etc.

The cane crop will be usually ready for harvest in 10 months.

The four-month-old crop was destroyed in the gale and heavy rain.

Farmers of the area have urged the Agriculture Department officials to take steps for inspecting the affected fields and provide adequate compensation to them.
