Students plan to protest against Sterlite reopening

Members of the Thoothukudi chapter of the All College Students Federation and All School Students Federation have requested all college and school students in the State to protest against reopening of Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper Plant.

Addressing a press meet in the city on Wednesday, K. Santosh, Thoothukudi co-ordinator of the All College Students Federation, said that he and his team had met a few college unions in the city and will meet more of them to garner support.

“The State government has claimed that it would move the Supreme Court against the order of the National Green Tribunal favouring the reopening of the plant. But the same government is clamping down peaceful protest by villagers around the plant. Youngsters are being threatened of arrest,” he claimed.

He said that those who purchase black cloth to hoist a flag in the house are also being warned. “The school students have come here missing their exams. For us, our lives are more important. We want the government to enac ta special Act to close the plant permanently,” he said.

“If the government failed to do so, there will be large scale protests by the students. We are not against anyone,” he said.
