MADURAI: The premises of Madurai Senthamizh College reverberated with music of traditional instruments such as `thappattam' and `kolattam' and the air was thick with the aroma of sweet pongal when the students celebrated the Pongal festival, on the college campus on Friday.

The students cooked quintessential Pongal made of rice, milk and jaggery in earthenware to the accompaniment of the shouts - `Pongalo Pongal' - using firewood and they also made kulavais to give a traditional tinge to the celebration. They performed thappattam, kollattam, oyilattam and danced to folk tunes and sang some folk songs as well. A pattimanram was also organised on the occasion.

The college secretary, Sankarapandiyan, inaugurated the celebration. The Governing Body of Madurai Senthamizh College president, N. Sethuraman, presided over the function.
