Thin attendance in Government offices, buses keep off the road

KOZHIKODE: The 24-hour nation-wide strike in protest against the `anti-worker' economic policies of the Union Government was total and peaceful in the district. The strike assumed the dimensions of a bandh with KSRTC and private buses keeping off the road. A holiday was declared for education institutions.

A KSRTC spokesman said that the buses would resume services only after 12 midnight. People had a tough time on Thursday. Most of the shops and business establishments were closed for the day.

Government offices reported thin attendance. Only 55 of the 210 staff at the Collectorate reported for duty on Thursday. Although some staff members had election related work, not all of them could make it owing to the lack of transport. Only two wheelers were seen on the roads during the day and in the evening cars were seen plying the roads. The strike also hit the banking sector.
