Stir enters second day

MADURAI, MARCH 24. Work in insurance offices continued to be affected today as the strike by employees of the New India Assurance, National Insurance, Oriental Insurance and United India Insurance companies entered the second day. The response to the strike has been overwhelming and work has come to standstill at the offices with more than 2000 employees in the Madurai region abstaining from work, trade unions claimed.

The members of All-India Insurance Employees Association, General Insurance Employees All-India Association, National Federation of General Insurance Employees and National Confederation of General Insurance Officers Association and General Insurance Officers All-India Association staged a demonstration in Dindigul, which comes under the Madurai region.

The striking members who are participating in the nationwide strike have demanded the immediate implementation of enhanced wages and promotions and protested the proposed hike in foreign direct investment in insurance sector.
