Speed post passport service in more post offices

CHENNAI, JAN. 31. Enthused by ``encouraging response'', the Postal department has decided to make available the Speed Post Passport Service in more post offices.

Now, the scheme is available in six city post offices. During February, it will be extended to seven more offices in and around Chennai. The department has drawn up a programme to introduce it in a gradual manner.

The date on which the scheme is to be launched in various head post offices is as follows: February 4 - Park Town; February 5 - T.Nagar; February 6 - Mylapore; February 7 - Adyar and GPO; February 8 - St. Thomas Mount, and February 13 - Tambaram.

Under the scheme, passport application forms are sold along with envelopes at Rs. 20 per application. On acceptance, a service charge of Rs. 100 per application will be charged besides the normal fee of Rs. 300 through demand drafts.

The Speed Post Offices will provide file and key numbers for enabling customers to get in touch with the passport office to ascertain the status of their application. The forms are accepted on Saturdays too.

At present, this arrangement is available at Anna Nagar, Anna Road, IIT, Triplicane and Vadapalani post offices, apart from the Speed Post Business Centre on Greames Road. The service commenced in Pondicherry in November last.

Since the service was launched in the first set of six post offices in March last, nearly 30,300 application forms were sold and around 7,725 accepted. Asked why number of the accepted forms was less, a department official said several applicants submitted the forms directly to the passport office.
