Special team probing another attack complaint

CHENNAI, NOV. 29. The special team, which is investigating the Sankararaman murder case, is also enquiring into a complaint on the attack on a person on Greams Road here in August this year.

The incident occurred exactly a month prior to the killing of the manager of Sri Varadarajaperumal Temple at Kancheepuram. The victim sustained grievous injuries and was hospitalised.

On August 3, Thirukkoshtiyur Madhavan, treasurer of the Divya Desa Paarambariya Paadukappu Peravai, was riding a two-wheeler to an advocate's office at Purasawalkam here, when he was attacked from behind by someone with an iron rod. He fell down and was taken to a private hospital.

Mr. Madhavan did not file a complaint immediately. A complaint was lodged with the Thousand Lights police after the victim came to know from press reports that one of the accused in the Sankararaman murder case had stated he was involved in the attack.

`Reason for assault'

Sources said one reason suspected for the attack was that Mr. Madhavan had opposed the demolition of a Siva shrine inside a Vaishnavite temple in Tirunelveli district. He moved the High Court and the case was pending.

When contacted, Mr. Madhavan, declined to talk about the incident.

Soon after the murder of Sankararaman, police sources said the hand of some gang members was strongly suspected in the attacks on S. Radhakrishnan of Mandaveli here, who was once associated with the Mutt, and Mr. Madhavan.
