TIRUVARUR: Zonal officials had been appointed in each taluk in this district for implementing the State Government's scheme of assigning house site pattas to homeless poor people, the Collector, P. Ekambaram, said on Thursday.

After holding a meeting with revenue officials including P. Moorthy, District Revenue Officer, here on Thursday, the Collector said that a sum of Rs.75 lakhs had been allotted for acquiring land to provide free house site pattas.

The scheme would be implemented in all 430 panchayats and seven special panchayats in the district. Mr. Ekambaram said that the officials had been directed to identify the people who were occupying unobjectionable poromboke land and take immediate steps to regularise their sites as per the Government guidelines.

People living in objectionable poromboke land would be provided house site pattas at some other places.

He said that the Government had relaxed the ban of giving house site pattas within 16-km distance from the district headquarters and pointed out that it had been reduced to eight-km now.

Families with an annual income of Rs.16,000 or those who figured in the list of people living below poverty line were eligible to get house site pattas.

Mr. Ekambaram said that tahsildars and deputy tahsildars would receive petitions from homeless poor people in the presence of village panchayat presidents and panchayat union officials.

An official in the cadre of Deputy Collector would verify the claim and prepare a list of beneficiaries.

Later, the list would be placed in the gram sabha meetings for approval.
