PUDUKOTTAI, OCT.7 . The State Government has formed a welfare society to help women self-help groups.

The society, which functions at Chennai, has a chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, treasurer and a few office-bearers. Two members from viable SHGs from each district and all DSMS secretaries will be members of the general body.

An official told The Hindu that the society had been formed to explore and identify the market potential for SHG products. It would take up feasibility study, and help SHGs in product standardization and quality control. It would help them in procurement and supply of raw materials, transport and storage of raw materials, and finished goods. It would assist them in export of their products and promotion of their goods through advertisements.

The society would provide consultancy in boosting production and sale of products, and collaborate with various institutions and agencies. The DSMS, Pudukottai, had been acting as a nodal marketing agency in the State until formation of the society.

Trade fair

The official said the society would participate in the International Trade Fair in 2004, which will be held at Chennai from October 9 to 17.

The society would put up a stall in the trade fair and showcase the best products manufactured by SHGs.
