Sub-inspector suspended for assaulting college student

They allegedly had a spat over not carrying original papers

The city police on Saturday placed under suspension a sub-inspector who allegedly assaulted a 22-year-old college student recently in Chetpet.

A few days ago, Muhammad Haroon Sait shared a post on social media stating that he and a few of his friends were riding back home after attending a wedding on July 19 around 11.30 p.m. He alleged that a few policemen stopped them as part of checks on Spurtank road, Chetpet.

‘Bribe demanded’

Mr. Sait alleged that the police demanded a bribe, as his friend, who was riding a bike, did not have a licence. He claimed that sub-inspector M.H. Ilayaraja of Chetpet police station was heading the team.

Mr. Sait said that during the checks, he produced his licence and other documents. However, the SI asked for the original documents.

Departmental probe

An argument ensued and in the process, he claimed that Mr. Ilayaraja slapped him and later hit him with a lathi.

Mr. Sait lodged a complaint on Friday and after a departmental inquiry, the sub-inspector was placed under suspension.
