Usually, the sale of readymade garments such as children's wear and ladies wear touched Rs. 5 crores during Deepavali and Rs. 2 crores during Pongal. Merchants expect half the amount to come on Pongal eve, Friday, alone.

Wholesale rate

One of the readymade garment sellers at Market here Rajendran says that normally the purchase begins two days before Pongal, but this time it has been for the last five days. Readymade garments are purchased from Bangalore, Tirupur and Erode too at wholesale rate, and he stocks garments that cost anywhere from Rs. 30 to Rs. 500.

Stop hardsell

A regular readymade garments buyer Sridhar regrets that a few shopkeepers at the Market practically drag potential customers - including women - to their shops.

He demands that the practice be stopped.

The over-100 shops will open till 9 a.m. on Saturday for buyers who may turn up late at night or early in the morning.
