`Set up apex court Bench in Chennai'

CHENNAI, OCT. 11. The Jananayaga Munnetra Kazhagam led by S. Jagathrakshegan has urged the Centre to set up a Supreme Court Bench in Chennai for the convenience of litigants in the south.

The executive committee of the kazhagam, which met here yesterday, said the people in the south travelled thousands of km to file cases in the apex court.

Stressing the need for linking the major rivers for an effective solution to recurring droughts and floods, the kazhagam, however, said the linking of the Ganga with other major rivers would take a long time as it involved permission of neighbouring countries. So as an immediate measure, it appealed to the Centre to link the peninsular rivers in the first phase to save Tamil Nadu from the perennial drought.

The meeting congratulated the party president for his move to undertake a 1,500-km march in north Tamil Nadu in December demanding reservation based on population of various communities and stressing the need for communal harmony.
