Semmalai inaugurates AIDS counselling centre

CHENNAI DEC. 4. A Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre (VCTC) to sensitise people on HIV/AIDS, offer counselling and conduct blood tests at a highly subsidised rate, was inaugurated by the Health Minister, S. Semmalai, at the Government Royapettah Hospital here today.

The centre, with both male and female counsellors and doctors, will sensitise people on the management of HIV/AIDS and its various social and medical aspects. The Chennai Corporation AIDS Prevention and Control Society (CAPACS) will provide the centre with all the resource inputs, including the testing kits.

Those willing to get their blood samples tested for HIV can avail of the facility at a cost of Rs. 10. Inaugurating the centre, Mr. Semmalai said VCTCs would be set up at all district-level hospitals to benefit a maximum number of people. The Local Administration Minister, M. C. Sampath, said it was the collective responsibility of all in society to spread awareness of the virus.
