Scrap Enayam project, fishermen urge Centre

Demanding scrapping of Enayam International Container Transhipment Terminal (EICTT) project, the fishermen, carrying fishnet, submitted a petition at the Collector’s office here on Tuesday, on the occasion of World Fisheries Day.

Led by Rev. Fr. Churchill of South Asian Fishermen Fraternity, the fishermen said the EICTT, besides wiping out livelihood of fishermen, would drive them out of their native places.

As this project would destroy the fishing industry of Kanniyakumari district, which earned huge foreign exchange every year, the Union government should give up this proposal.

Besides according a Scheduled Tribe status to the fishermen, the State government should extend loans with subsidised interest as the credit facility being given to the farmers. The Centre, considering the foreign exchange being earned by the fishermen, should create a separate ministry for the fishermen’s welfare.

The Assembly constituencies of Kanniyakumari, Colachel and Killiyoor should be reserved for the fishermen and the sea erosion should be treated as a ‘natural disaster’. Fishermen of mechanised boats registered in Tamil Nadu should be allowed to sell fish in any State and the communication gadgets and fish gears should be provided at subsidised cost, the petitioners said.
