Around 800 delegates likely to take part

CHENNAI: A national three-day conference on `Science, Technology and Society: Emerging Issues' will be hosted jointly by University of Madras and Loyola College from Wednesday.

D.Jayalakshmi, organising committee secretary of the conference, said that the programme, an annual feature of the Delhi-based Indian Sociological Society, is to be held in Chennai for the first time.

About 800 delegates including 60 persons from countries such as Sri Lanka, Israel, Malaysia, America and Iran are expected to participate in the conference to be held at Loyola College.

Xavier Vedam, college vice-principal, and co-organising committee secretary, said the inaugural ceremony of the conference would be presided over by A. Raja, Union Minister for Environment and Forests, at the University of Madras. About 550 papers will be presented on themes such as gender, culture and communication and diasporic studies.

Four symposia on various subjects including science, technology and social inequality and the changing demographic profile of India would also be held.
