Schools record better results

MADURAI: Madurai district recorded a pass percentage of 86 bettering its last year's performance by two per cent in the SSLC examinations held in April, the results of which were declared on Saturday.

Once again, it was girls who ruled the roost outscoring boys in the pass percentage. Girls registered 90 per cent while only 82 per cent of boys turned out successful.

Madurai district, comprising Usilampatti, Melur and Madurai Educational districts, witnessed considerable increase in the performance of the students this time, despite the new syllabus. "Initially, students found it tough handling Science subject under the new syllabus. But when they sat for the exams, the question paper was found to be easy which reflected in their performance," said H. Kalyana Sundaram, Headmaster, TVS Higher Secondary School.

The number of schools, which recorded centum pass were 27, which included Kallar Higher Secondary School, Vickramangalam, and Indian Association of Blind (IAB) High School, Sundararajanpatti. It may be noted that IAB High School had secured centum pass results in the recently declared Plus Two results.

Government higher secondary schools recorded a pass percentage of 79 per cent, better than last year's 72 per cent. The Government Kallar School had registered 87 per cent pass - a clear 10 per cent increase from last year.

The Adi Dravida Welfare Schools scored 76 per cent pass bettering their last year's performance of 63 per cent. And 81 per cent of students of Corporation Schools turned out successful, two per cent better compared to previous year.

The aided-schools secured 90 per cent pass while their performance last year was 82 per cent.

The Management (self-financing) schools recorded centum pass results. Their last year's performance was 98 per cent.

District toppers

N. Harini (485) of T.V.S. HSS topped the district rankings. K. Pitchaimani (483) of Parasakthi HSS, Saptur Kottaipatti, finished second while A. Salomi (482) of Lourde Annai Girls HSS, K. Pudur, secured third rank. All the top three rankers had secured centum in Science and Maths.

Matric exam results

Madurai district registered a pass percentage of 94, which is three per cent better than last year's performance, in the Matriculation Examinations.

Of the 129 schools, 54 schools had secured centum results. Girls outnumbered boys in the number of students passed. Girls secured a pass percentage of 95 per cent while 93 per cent of boys turned out successfully in the exams.

Madurai and Melur Educational districts recorded an identical 93 per cent pass while Usilampatti Educational registered a pass percentage of 98.
