School students to be involved in salt testing campaign

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Salt is all set to take the centre stage in the district as thousands of school children are being involved in a massive salt testing campaign on October 25 and 26.

The message for the students and their parents is going to be simple: use iodised salt and avoid iodine deficiency, which could lead to mental disorders.

To take the campaign to schools, Education and Health department officials have come together to create awareness of the importance of iodised salt for the well being of students.

They have asked students of all government and private schools to bring samples of salt being used in their homes.

According to S. Shanmugasundaram, Deputy Director of Health Services, the district is observing Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day on October 26 and the two-day salt testing campaign in schools would be the best way to drive home the message.
