Save Sabarimala

Sir, - A study conducted by the School of Social Sciences of the M.G. University, Kottayam, relating to Sabarimala found that the number of the pilgrims has reached a saturation point and further increase will endanger the ecology of the region.

The study suggests going back to the traditional type of pilgrimage where a pilgrim used to carry his own food basket and was self-sufficient.

Till about three decades ago the pilgrimage to Sabarimala was considered arduous involving physical hardship and called for utmost discipline. Only people with deep faith and devotion undertook the pilgrimage.

Today the entire process has been commercialised and all comforts are available on payment.

Hence the suggestion of the study to enforce the traditional type of pilgrimage should be given effect to without any reservation to keep the number of pilgrims within manageable limits.
