Satyarthi to campaign against child sex abuse

Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi will undertake a Bharat Yatra from Kanniyakumari to New Delhi to fight child sexual abuse and trafficking. He will begin on 11 September from Kanniyakumari, arrive in Chennai and end in New Delhi on 16 September.

Abdul Ghani, member of the State Bharat Yatra Committee, said the idea of this journey is to fight for their rights. “He will not only meet the victims and their family members but also members from the judiciary and politics too,” he added.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, child marriage is a cause for concern in Tamil Nadu with 2 lakh girls and 1.6 boys married off before the legal age. Also, between 2013-2015, over 10,000 children went missing.

Paul Bhaskar, state coordinator, said, “There is no sufficient data; also, these people, when they migrate, need to be registered but there is stigma associated with that too. So, the government and the NGOs will have to work together to first register them.”
