Salem-based social worker honoured

SALEM: The Open International University, Colombo, has conferred honoris causa degree on Umarani Selvaraj, a Salem-based social worker, in appreciation of her public service.

The Governor of Sabarahamuga Province, Sri Lanka Sri. Ranatunga awarded the degree recently at Colombo.

Umarani (45) has been at the forefront of various social activities since 1988 in Salem district. She has been the president of `Swasam', a group of 35 women's associations taking up various welfare activities among women and their education.

The primary objective is economic empowerment of women in the State.

Umarani was also the Councillor in Salem Corporation between 1996-2001 and the vice-president of Salem branch of the Indian Red Cross Society. She is the district coordinator for AIMS for India, a U.S.-based social organisation.
